Instructor-in-training volunteer program

Are you interested in becoming a ski or snowboard instructor? Do you want to gain experience while earning volunteer hours? As a not-for-profit ski and snowboard facility, Brimacombe can help you do both!

Snow School Volunteers

Our snow school volunteers work hand-in-hand with certified instructors, assisting with our lesson programs and gaining valuable on-hill experience. Volunteers are also given the opportunity to improve their own skills and techniques by joining instructor-training sessions with our top instructors. Volunteers are also eligible to receive up to 100% off the cost of the Seven-Week Instructor Prep Course. Individual discounts will be based on hours worked and overall commitment.

PeeWee Ski Camp Volunteers

Skiers who volunteer as counsellors in the PeeWee Ski Camp on Saturday and/or Sunday mornings will benefit from a pre-program training session with certified instructors before gaining valuable hands-on teaching experience either assisting or leading camp sessions for a full six-week period. All participants are also eligible to receive up to 100% off the cost of the Seven-Week Instructor Prep Course. Individual discounts will be based on hours worked and overall commitment.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Age 14+
  • Strong skier or snowboarder
  • Desire to help participants learn to ski or ride

Instructor Prep Course
(90 minutes, 7 weeks + min. 20 volunteer hours)

For advanced skiers and snowboarders 14 yrs and up.

Getting ready to take your CSIA or CASI Level 1 Instructor Course? This prep course will prepare you with the perfect combination of instruction and hands-on experience.

The Instructor Prep Course now combines 90 minutes of weekly tips and training from one of our most experienced pros with a minimum of 20 hours of valuable hands-on volunteer experience. All participants are required to complete volunteer hours with either the Brimacombe Snow School or PeeWee Ski Camp.

Becoming an Instructor

To become a certified instructor you must pass a Level 1 certification course with either the Canadian Ski Instructors Association (CSIA) or the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors (CASI). While Brimacombe holds such certification courses on-site several times each season, we are simply the host site. All interested parties must register through either the CSIA or CASI. Please see below for basic course descriptions and a link to the respective websites.

CSIA Level 1 Certification Course

Duration: 4 days Prerequisites: 15 years of age

The Level 1 course is an introduction to ski teaching, CSIA technique and methodology, and the role of ski teaching within the ski industry. It combines the basics of practical ski teaching methods, technical understanding and development of guest service skills, specifically addressing children’s skiing

CASI Level 1 Instructor Course

Duration: 3 days Prerequisites: 15 years of age

The CASI Level 1 Snowboard Instructor certification course is open to strong intermediate snowboarders, aged 15 years and older. Candidates on the Level 1 Course will spend time exploring snowboarding technique and teaching methods across a variety of venues, both on-snow (up to and including intermediate terrain) and during indoor presentations.
