That’s all folks….
April 6th, 2008What a GREAT weekend to wrap up the 2007-2008 season with! Not only is it APRIL, and most of the other resorts are closed..but we had ample snow and SUNSHINE ALL DAY LONG!

April 6th…our last day of the season….

this photo sums up the weekend best I think….
It really was a fantastic season, I heard a report the other day that claimed we have had MORE SUNNY DAYS over the last four months than we have had in YEARS…and I believe the same can be said for the amount of NATURAL snowfall. We were open 94 days and 58 nights, and were able to have 100% of our terrain open for one of the longest spans of time in recent memory…with 3 and a half of those runs open on NATURAL SNOW ONLY (half of Whistler, and all of Sunny Side, Nice and Easy and the Farmers field were covered with ALL NATURAL SNOW ONLY).
I’d like to thank everyone who supported our internal buisnesses, the OSC PROSHOP-RENTALS and the KIRBY SNOW SCHOOL, where all of your money will go DIRECTLY back into the operation of your club….and also for supporting the Cafeteria services at the East Chalet (operated by the Craig Group) and the West Chalet (operated by Janet Rutherford). Supporting our internal and affliate buisnesses is imperative to keeping membership and guest pass costs down, and enables us to maintain and grow this facility to be what I truely believe it is..the BEST ski and snowboard experience in Southern Ontario.
So…what do we do now?
One of the most popular questions I get asked at this time of year is…”What do you do for the summer months?”
Well….after sliming the staff down to around 5 year round employees, we move into a planning, project management, property maintenance/improvement mode. The lifts have certain components disassembled for inspection, non-destructive testing, preventative and annual maintenance routines. The grooming machines undergo thorough check-ups and preventative/repair maintenance. In general, we are kept very busy preparing for the year ahead…believe me, it will be snowing again before we know it!
I’d like to thank our Management team for their strong dedication to our club…I often get the credit, but truth be told, without our department managers, we simply would be be as succesful.
Our management team is made up of the following people (in no particular order)…
Linda Schaffer - Manager of Administration
Tim Stezik - Risk Manager
Kassandra Glasbergen - Lift Staff Manager
Dave Rutherford - Snowmaking Manager
Peter Smith - Snow School Manager
Jim Bell - Proshop-Rental Manager
Doug Taylor - Grooming Manager
Stephan Horn - Terrain Park Manager
Dave Chatteron - Maintenance Manager
I’d also like to thank our 200 plus group of employees who work the lifts, clean our buildings, work the night shifts grooming and making snow, teaching lessons etc.etc.etc.
Another dedicated group that deserves recognition is our SKI PATROL…Led by Bill Gyurka. These folks volunteer a tremendous amount of time to offer us their first-aid and snow safety services, if you are interested in becoming a part of this team, email us and we will send you in the right direction.
Our Board of Directors and Executive committee also deserve a word of thanks…they put in a large amount of volunteer time behind the scenes, and help us maintain the vision of the Oshawa Ski Club. Sometimes unpopular decisions have to be made…and these folks put a TON of effort into making sure the BEST interest of the MASS of our membership is considered.
Thank-you’s are always tough…I always feel I am forgetting someone, and if I have, it was only at the moment of writing this entry…everyone who plays a role in the success of our business is extremely valuable to us, and should be thanked.
The one group I NEVER forget to thank is YOU, our members, guests and supporters…without you, there would be no Oshawa Ski Club…you are our greatest asset, THANK-YOU.
Have a GREAT summer….
It was another day in PARADISE,
Cheers,
Mark
